Boy, I don't even know where to start on this one. Since I had been out of town I had not heard of
the pledge video nor of all the controversy that surrounded it. Without giving me any indication of what the video is about or her feelings, she had me watch it to see what I thought. As I started to watch it I thought that it was a pretty good message. Other than the fact that I did not agree with some of the pledges that were being made. Everyone has the right to pledge to what they think is right. But then came the dramatic conclusion, the climax of what all the pledges are leading up to! Demi Moore boldly states - "I pledge to be a servant to our president" then in unison all celebrities ask "What's YOUR pledge?" And there you have it. What could have been a great tool to unite americans to pledge to make this country better, and to help one another, was twisted into a platform to to push a political agenda. Rather than doing good, it spurred all kinds of anger and ultimately made many americans angry enough to
censor Barack Obamas speech on education to all school aged children.
"I pledge to be a servant to our President": I know it's been stated before, but it can't be stated enough, does Demi Moore (nor Hollywood) not realize that the president is in office to serve us, not the other way around? Last time I checked, we are not the United Kingdom of America. In fact I believe that there was a fairly
significant war in our history to ensure that was not the case.
"I pledge allegiance to the Funk. To the United Funk of Funkadellica"? What?! Does he even live on this planet? Get off the crack and then let's see if there are any brain cells left to have a decent conversation. Who is the president of "
Funkadellica" anyway...oh, he goes on to answer that question (while kissing his biceps) "
I pledge to be of service to Barack [kiss]
Obama [kiss]".
There are several other politically charged pledges that I don't want to get into here. Let me just state that there are at least two things that celebrities should not give advice about: 1) Politics 2) Morals. I think that it is irrisponsible for celebrities (particularly actors/actresses) to push political agendas. When someone is a great actor/actress we come to fall in love with their characters that they play. Many people will begin to trust a character and then mistake that celebrity for the character they play, not realizing what their real motives, opinions and agendas are. We know that celebrity sells (nike, T-Mobile, etc.), but when it comes to something as important as our politics it is irresponsible to sell by using celebrity. Let them stick to what they are good at ... entertaining us. Don't pretend that you "know" what is best for america and use your status to push your own agendas. You should get down off your high horse and experience what real americans are experiencing every day. You know, those of us that ultimately pay your salary.
I Pledge...
... to not take political advice from Hollywood.
... to serve my community and country, not be a servant to my president.
... to work hard to provide for my family.
... to love this beautiful and free country as I always have.
